Decks today

After 1909 decks multiplied. Some follow the Rider–Waite scheme, others draw on the classic Marseille style, where number cards have no scenes, and still others build their own system of symbols. There are also decks created in occult circles in the 20th century, such as the Thoth deck of Aleister Crowley and the artist Lady Frieda Harris.

  • Rider–Waite style decks: scenes on every card
  • Marseille style: number cards show only suit signs
  • Artist decks: illustrators invent their own images and themes

When choosing a deck, it helps to ask which images speak to you. A good deck for reading is one you want to look into.
