The Four Suits: How to Read the Minor Arcana

A deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana are split into four suits of 14 cards each: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Each suit covers a sphere of life, which is why the suits are a convenient place to start learning the cards. The Major Arcana look more mysterious, but the suits give clear reference points.

Each suit consists of an ace, ten numbered cards and four court cards: page, knight, queen and king. The ace opens the theme, the numbers show its development, and the court cards describe people or roles through which the theme appears. This structure repeats in every suit, so once you master one, the others become easier.

What each suit means

  • Wands: action, energy, projects, motivation, creativity.
  • Cups: feelings, relationships, intuition, emotional response.
  • Swords: thoughts, decisions, conflict, clarity and anxiety.
  • Pentacles: money, health, work and the material world.

Wands: fire and movement

Wands belong to the element of fire. They speak of beginnings, ambition and energy that pushes forward. When a spread contains many wands, the topic is usually action: something needs to be started, strengthened or finished. Sometimes wands also show the danger of burnout, when there is too much energy and it has no direction.

Cups: water and feelings

Cups are associated with water, and this link is felt in their images: waves, fish, cups that overflow. Cups speak of feelings, love, friendship and creative response. If they dominate a question about work, emotions may be influencing a decision more than you think. If they appear in a question about relationships, the depth of experience may be the topic.

Slide 1 of 3

Swords: air and thought

Swords belong to air and describe the work of the mind. This is where decisions, analysis, conflict and worry live. Swords often look alarming, and that is understandable: many fears are born in the head. But it is important to remember that swords also bring clarity. A sword that cuts through fog is also a tool of truth.

Swords do not always mean trouble. Sometimes they mean that it has finally become clear what is going on.

Pentacles: earth and matter

Pentacles belong to earth and are linked with money, health, work and the body. They show how ideas become reality. When pentacles dominate a spread, it is useful to ask what exactly needs doing in practice: draw up a budget, see a doctor, agree on deadlines. Pentacles rarely speak of dreams, but they describe the foundation well.

Reading combinations

If a work question brings many swords, look at your thoughts and worries. If a relationship question brings many pentacles, the focus may be on practical steps rather than feelings. Suits show which area a theme comes from. It works like diagnosis: first identify the sphere, then look at the specific cards.

It is also important to remember mixed spreads, where suits collide. Wands and swords together speak of decisive action that needs a careful plan. Cups and pentacles together describe a situation where feelings stand on a solid foundation. Such combinations rarely give a single answer, but they show inner tension well.

An exercise for beginners

Learn the suits one at a time. Take all the Wands, lay them out in order and describe each in one sentence: what is happening here and what theme is developing. Then do the same for Cups, Swords and Pentacles. In a month you will have mastered all 56 Minor Arcana, and they will become a clear language rather than a set of pictures.

Advice for beginners: do not try to learn all the cards at once. A detailed description of the deck and its symbols is on Wikipedia, but it is better to go step by step and check your readings against your own notes.
